Lady Nelson Overnight Yacht Race (90 Nm)

John & Ian Paterson's 'Rush' won the Lady Nelson last Saturday, finishing at 8:33am just in front of Jock MacAdie's Isuzu Marine doing it all 2 handed with his son Hamish. By in large, everyone seemed to enjoy the race but the wind did drop out soon after Rush finished and drastically slowed the rest of the fleet. Click here for full results

Jock did manage to get in a win, taking 1st place on AMS handicap and the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy. Click here for the full results

At 11am another fleet set off on another long race  (although 20Nm as opposed to 90Nm) for the F.D. Linace Trophy. They started off in just a whisper of wind, but came home in a comfortable afternoon sea breeze with Rory's new boat way in front. However on PHD handicap, the trophy went to 10th place across the line, Rob Hurrell's 'Sweet Dreams'. Click here for full results

Thanks to those who manned the race tower from 7pm Friday night to the early hours on Saturday morning. They were Harry Tedstone, Peter Austin, Graham Noel, Wayne Dixon, Don Richmond, Mark Burton, Philip McLean, Sarah Phillips, Paul Woodman, Ross Fisher, James Hodgens, Joe Wilding & Robert De Vries. Shifts were divided up into 2 hour watches with two per persons each watch.

Etchells - Frank Hall Trophy

Great to see the Etchells fleet starting to build last Saturday, with 14 yachts out racing on centre course. Both races won by John Collingwood on 'Magic Buzz' which was a bit of an eye opener. Races 3 & 4 resume this Saturday.

Dragons & Jubilee fleets were missing as all these sailors volunteered to run the Access States over the weekend with Deborah Lloyd as PRO. I'm sure we'll get a full report on that very soon.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON RACING - FEB 20 2008

Last week's Pursuit start saw eleven boats line up in a 20-23 kn southerly wind for a romp around Home Course #1. First cab off the rank was Tales and after a procession of another nine boats, Avanti finally leapt out of the blocks 38 minutes later, sporting a #3 headsail and #1 reefed main, a timely choice for the escalating conditions. The lively conditions caught a few skippers short and one was seen to be doing a "360" at #1 on the last rounding after being caught in a significant leeward drift.

Sunkiss, skippered by rapidly rising star Heather Gee led the fleet all day and took well deserved Line Honours, sealing her victory with a convincing three minute lead over Graham Noel and his dedicated "ancients" aboard Hot Shot. Tim Cormack and the gang aboard Vintage Burgundy tried valiantly to catch the Hot Shots but but only managed another three minute gap. Hot on their heels, they were pursued by Conrad, Avanti and Redline and then the finish sequence approximated the starts with one minute intervals between the remaining competitors.

Due to a discrepancy in Pursuit Start times published on the web and in the bar, Conrad was initially penalised for an early start but then reinstated to her elapsed finish time. After much discussion, our leader Harry Tedstone has pronounced that for future races, PURSUIT START TIMES WILL NO LONGER BE PUBLISHED ON THE WEB UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. TIMES WILL BE AVAILABLE EACH WEEK IN THE MEMBER'S BAR OR BY CALLING THE TOWER ON THE DAY OF THE RACE BEFORE 1355 OR AFTER 1400 HRS.

Having sorted out the vagaries of Pursuit Starts, you will be pleased to hear that this week is the third FLEET START with warning signal 1355hrs and all contestants are expected to hit the line at 1400hrs!

Weather is shaping up to be another brisk sail with predicted south to southwesterly winds 15 to 20 knots tending southeasterly to 15 knots at night and waves around one metre.

See you all on the start line for another great day of racing.
