LAST WEEK OF RACING

Hearne's Heroes - Wednesday April 30 2008

The wind at the start was N, and it stayed that way, with the odd notable exception. 17 to 26 knots all afternoon.

There were 12 boats out there with Flying Fox (Paul Woodman) and 97 (Alan Saunders) being new boats for Hearne's Heroes. Paul was testing s new keel, and Alan testing a new crew. Hope we see you both back on a regular basis.

The northerly windward/leeward course, (S-5-6-1-6-5-6-1-F) was the starter's selection, and the fleet prepared for a Fleet Start.

The start was interesting, with the Tower end apparently being favoured. However, Adam's Rib started from the pin and still made it 3rd around #5, behind 97 and Flying Fox, just ahead of Clipper III and Avanti. The rest of the fleet were already starting to spread. The run to #1 seemed to create problems for some boats, with the exception of Flying Fox. 97 patrolled the course, while Clipper III and Avanti both got past Adam's Rib, but further back in the fleet positions seemed to be settling down.

Avanti was one of the few boats to take the high road, back to #6, with the others heading inshore. By the time boats came back to the mark, Avanti had picked up a lovely lift, was well up with Flying Fox, both behind 97.

From here to the finish little changed, as 97 stayed in front, and Avanti duelled with Flying Fox. Back in the fleet Adam's Rib slipped inexorably backwards, going down to Red Line, Clipper III and Vintage Burgundy.

At the finish it was 97 taking the gun, 3 minutes ahead of Flying Fox, with Avanti a further 30 seconds behind.

The final results, after taking handicaps into account, had Avanti winning by over a minute from Clipper III, with Vintage Burgundy 3rd. Complete results are available on the web-site.

See you all out there next week, for a Pursuit Start.

Association Cup

It was a great racing weekend for the Association Cup this year, the wind remained constant although not as strong as some had hoped! RBYC overall placed 3rd which was a fantastic effort, well done to all those that competed Click here for full results. Results for the Vice Presidents trophy are yet to appear however at first glance I have a feeling we did quite well, keep checking RYCV results site for updates (the scores should appear some time in the next 2 days)

ORCV 2-Handed Race

Seventeen boats from various bay clubs rallied off RBYC last Sunday May 4 to compete in the annual ORCV 25nm Two-handed Race. Unfortunately, this event clashed with the racing of the YV Assosciation Cup, but nonetheless three boats from RBYC faced the starter, for a demanding but enjoyable day on the water.

AUDACIOUS, with Greg Clinnick and Paul Holden aboard, performed exceptionally well in all divisions with 2nd in AMS and 4th in IRC and PHD. INGENUE with David James and Rosie Colahan aboard achieved sixth place PHD after swapping places on numerous occasions throughout the race with the "Eves" aboard ADAMS RIB, Sally Williams and Patricia Laverty, who finished only 44 secs behind after 4.5 hrs of racing in 7th place PHD.

Race Officer, Robin Hewitt paid tribute in his race report to the only all girl crew, as he watched over from the RBYC Tower and commended their supreme winching and kite efforts in the brisk conditions!

For a full report on the race, go to http://www.orcv.org.au/ This race concluded the 2007-2008 Port Phillip Two Handed Series. We await with interest the overall results for the series.

We have had a fantastic response from generous owners in offering their boats for Lady Skippers to take the helm for the day and thank them and their regular crews for their support. We also welcome family members who are stepping up to drive the boat for the day and join in the fun.

At this stage, we have accommodated all those who have expressed an interest in racing on the day, but if you would still like to participate in this fun event, either as skipper, crew member or boat owner, please contact Rosie Colahan (mail to davros@bigopond.net.au )

With less than three weeks to go to the event, the time for familiarisation and skippering opportunities is diminishing.
