Frostbite Regatta - Muddying the Waters
Last Sunday a hand picked team of crack Senior Member sailors with support from our Sabot group risked their health and well being to defend our holding the Muddy Water Trophy.
Led by the Commodore, our team comprised C.C. Paul Woodman, Paul Jackson and Robert Lichter . RMYS were represented by Commodore John Hart, C.C. Phil Grossi, Peter Davison and Tony Warren accompanied by five of their junior members.
(As RBYC has held this trophy for the past couple of years, and given the parlous state of RMYS Sabot sailing we could have held it forever, it was secretly decided that in order to maintain their interest we would allow them to win this year. Not an ideal note to end your commodoreship on but a sacrifice that had to be made in the interest of maintaining good inter-club relations.)
The format decided was to run two races each for the juniors and then the seniors twice round a triangular course within the breakwater. As the trophy is traditionally decided on one race the first senior’s race would be an "Invitation" race and the second the championship race.
Nine of our Sabots were rigged and the juniors made a ragged exit from the beach to the starting line off the main walkway of the marina. From an equally ragged start to a spread out finish our junior members George Walch and first year sailor Bevan East took out first and second with Rebecca Raven from RMYS third. Unfortunately the light s.s.westerly reduced the racing to one race of one round for each group. The light wind did however reduce the danger of a "senior swim" and it is to be hoped that Rory Thomas covered his bets!
At the start whistle for THE race our Commodore was first across the line but from then on we followed and the result was RMYS first, second, fifth and eighth with RBYC third, fourth, sixth and seventh. As planned, trophy to RMYS 16 points to 20.
Thanks go to our RO Deb Lloyd and her shore support team, to the crews of the two ribs and to Ross Chisholm who miraculously appeared on his way home to Darwin from Thailand.
