RBYC DRAGON NEWS 8 JULY 2008
Well what a great and interesting season the RBYC Dragon fleet has had this year. Whilst the fleet is still small we a looking at an increase in fleet numbers as we move towards the Dragon World Championship being conducted at RBYC in January 2011. The International Dragon Fleet grew by 61 new boats last year. A terrific effort this is more boats than the Etchell Fleet world wide and shows the strength of the class world wide. Check the Dragon website at www.intdragon.org for great pics
Whilst the main fleet have gone into retirement for the winter months, however our expat Hugh Howard thinks the Aussies are soft and he has had his crew out racing these cold winter Saturdays, Hugh believes that a Melbourne winter is equivalent to an English summer day. Especially when his UK Club held their opening race of the season whilst it was snowing during the race. More about this next week.
Our ambassadors are heading overseas to talk up the Worlds in 2011 with Chas & Maureen Stanton in America talking to the USA fleet and touring around on holidays.
Hugh & Julie Howard are in the UK (the rumour is Hugh is checking out the new Petticrows dragon, see them at http://www.petticrows.co.uk/). Following this he is heading to Germany, look out! A new set of Fritz sails may be on the shopping list.
John Eyles who has joined the Dragon fleet this year and is sailing with Don Blanksby. John is giving freely his advice during races on Beverley2 and on BOOTS on Wednesday race days. It is reported that when John is "coaching" it resembles an episode of Ramsey’s Kitchen. John is heading to Ireland to sail in the veteran 18footer regatta in Ireland and whilst there revving them up to come to Melbourne and checking out some of the second hand Petticrows boats in Ireland.
Prior to this the issue the Dragon fleet had a great night at the St Kilda Seabaths Beachcomber Cafe http:/www.beachcombercafe.com.au/ our fleet sponsor where they were holding the fabulous Thursday night Oyster extravaganza with oysters served 8 different ways combined with a wine tasting.
Beachcomber are our sponsors again for 2009 where you will notice the orange beachcomber spinnakers and a bottle of Beachcomber Wine for the Dragon Yachtsman of the day each week.
