WISC RACING Sunday 9th November.
RBYC hosted Heat 2 of the WISC series last Sunday.
The forecast of 10-15 knot variable winds was promising, but not to eventuate. After a clean getaway in around 6-8 knots, the fleet split as the wind began to fade, with some boats heading west and others taking the inshore route looking for breeze.
Skippers and crews had to rise to the challenge of little or no wind, and as some of the lightweights made slow progress to the windward mark, the remainder were becalmed or drifting backwards! Those wonderful meteorological terms "variable" and "local" breezes were true to form, as boats within 500 metres of one another were on the same tack but vastly different headings, many reaching, others close hauled and some under spinnaker.
The wind filled in sufficiently and Harry shortened course to enable a result for Heat 2. No further racing took place for the day. The "post mortem" on racing for the day took place upstairs over delicious antipasto platters provided by our new caterers – possibly the winner of the day!
